In an iGaming Daily first, the Portuguese online gaming market was under the spotlight following reports of record revenues, particularly in the online casino and sports betting segments.

James Ross, SBC’s Multimedia Editor, was joined by Greentube’s Regional Manager for Western Europe, Lisa Sandner, to explore how suppliers can maintain growth and momentum, as well as some of the biggest challenges they face in the country.

Portugal’s online gambling market reported revenue of €261.8m, with online casino leading the way and slot machines alone accounting for over 80% of casino spending.

Lisa described the region as a small but “highly attractive” market that has seen impressive growth amongst the operators that Greentube works within the jurisdiction.

One of the game types that has been most effective in Portugal is crash games, and Lisa also revealed that Greentube is in the process of delivering its first crash to the operators it works with, both in Portugal and further afield.

A focus for any supplier is responsible gambling, especially in a country such as Portugal where the country’s gambling authority, SRIJ, reported a 41.6% year-over-year rise in online self-exclusion registrations in the final quarter of 2023.

On Greentube’s responsible gambling efforts, Lisa said: “From a supplier perspective, we ensure that our games are developed in a way so that operators can supply their self-exclusion tools for the protection of their players.

“We are agreeing to ensure compliance in Portugal by partnering with the regulators from the beginning. We use experts in compliance and we’re keeping the communication clear with them as well. By adapting our products to meet local rules and by using feedback, we balance the following regulations with making our products as attractive as possible with the markets.”

She also reiterated Greentube’s commitment to only supply to fully regulated operators, which Lisa explained also helps to differentiate the company from other suppliers.
