What is being said?
Discussing his beginnings in the gaming and gambling industries, Schrier explained: “I started off very entrepreneurial actually, but I started in the broadcast business and that took me to San Francisco where a lot of that tech stuff started. I did a lot of tech start-up stuff back in the day. I lost some money and made some money – that sort of stuff. Generally I was very entrepreneurial and did a lot around deal-making, which started me on the path that I’m on now.
“I also did a lot of stuff in telecommunications and a lot with mobile phones, which brought me into the gaming industry, so my first foray into that is when we went to Malta and got a number of licenses and an operator license to run a mobile phone casino back in 2003. Obviously, that was four years before the iPhone was launched. Back in those days it was a bit of a pain to download the games so even though I think we had a pretty good product, it was way before its day.”
Discussing Schrier’s debut book, ‘Build Your Sales Tribe’, Richardson noted how the text ‘fits a gap’ in the market: “Around the time that we were entering this industry in the early 2000s, I was faced with the same issue that I wanted to find out what was out there about complex selling, but the book that I came across was ‘Hope Is Not a Strategy’ by a guy called Rick Page. He was the first guy to analyse complex sales in a way that I could understand and that made sense to me.
“In about 2005, he came over and gave a show and tell near London 15 years ago but until your book, nobody else was dealing with that ‘how do you sell in this modern, information age where speed is everything?’ The difficulty of complex selling wasn’t like selling widgets – it was ideas, it was intellectual property, capability or the capacity to do something. So, for sure, Rick Page’s book was one-of-a-kind at the time but that’s now obviously out of date.”
