On the latest episode of iGaming Daily, Fernando Noodt, Senior Journalist for SBC Noticias, was joined by Ricardo Assis, Editor of SBC Noticias Brasil, and Ana Maria Menezes, Business Journalist for SBC Noticias Brazil, to recap an action-packed first day at SBC Summit Latinoamerica.

Ana and Ricardo are both new to the industry so the pair recounted how they had found their first day at the event, and also spoke about some of the key talking points.

“I heard a lot of people talking about the KYC process in Brazil,” explained Ricardo. “That’s going to be really important because it’s going to be obligatory for all operators so there’s a lot of talk about the necessity to have a provider in this area and the technical difficulties this area has in Brazil.

“Brazil is a country where betting is often associated with the class B, C and D and these classes often don’t have really good cell phones and since KYC is necessary, [operators] have to have technology that applies to a lot of phones.

“So this is an area that is having a lot of discussion because it’s vital that they get it right so the market can operate.”

Ana agreed that this was a discussion that she had with many people at the event who expressed the need to find the right people to help guide them throughout the process of joining the Brazilian market.

Later on in the episode, the trio also discussed the latest update in the ongoing legal battle between the Attorney General’s office in Brazil and the Rio de Janeiro State Lottery (Loterj).

Ana said: “[Last week], the office of the Attorney General (PGR) reinforced the request to prohibit the operation of online betting houses licensed by Loterj. PGR states to the Supreme Court that relaxation of territorial limitations could create an imbalance in Brazil throughout the national territory.”

The issue for Loterj stems from the state regulator not using geo-localisation tools. This means that Loterj does not verify and ensure that the players who state they are betting in Rio De Janeiro are based in the state when the bets are made.
