Ottolenghi explained: “Consumer behaviour has absolutely changed over the last 20 or 30 years but it seems to have become coherent in the thinking for business strategy in the last five years. We’ve seen the growth of things like social media and social networks, the adoption in the last 10 years of smartphones, and clearly a lifestyle and behavioural which is primarily focused on what is now a digital connected world.

“If you’re going to be competitive in any market, you have to be digital first. You have to think, ‘what are the technologies that engage my customer?’, but ultimately, ‘what technologies are needed to support that?’ and ‘how does that bring my company into the 21st century?’”

He continued: “The casino industry clearly has to think about that and is now adopting those strategies whilst adapting to this new type of consumer and their behaviour, and they’re doing it through technology strategies if you will, or technology approaches.

“Now, what do those technology approaches and strategies look like? Well, they look like digital platforms and they actually define the strategy of the 21st century casino. And the 21st century casino looks remarkably like other companies that have gone through these successful, evolving models, or transformations into digital platforms.”
