The latest edition of Sporting Narratives takes a closer look at an episode from the Vice World of Sports series, which portrays the incredible story of the NBA’s Chris Boucher. 

A catalogue of unwanted injuries meant that NBA champions, the Toronto Raptors, were forced to call on their full squad earlier in the season then they probably would have desired, however it allowed the 26-year-old Boucher to thrive.

Vice’s detailed look at the rise of Boucher documents many of the trials and tribulations the player endured, from when he was made homeless at 16, to overcoming injury adversity. 

Although it’s only short in length, the show focused on how Boucher refocused his career and set his sights on following in the path of so many that have become NBA stars through the minor league of the Raptors.

Boucher’s surge in the G League led to him being the first player to be named the NBA G League Most Valuable Player and the NBA G League Defensive Player of the Year, in the same year. What epitomises the character of Boucher, is the landmark season that came off the back of him overcoming the adversity of not being selected in the NBA draft. 

The short film really underlines the importance of the G League and the role it plays in building confidence and giving a platform to prospects in the sport. 

The emotiveness and significance of the film is elevated by Boucher’s rise this season, with the former college star helping the NBA champions by racking up two consecutive double-figure scoring games and leading the Raptors to a well earned victory over the LA Lakers.  

Furthermore, as Boucher’s stock continues to grow, which it feels inevitable it will, the film and the story of the 6′ 9 forward will be told on numerous occasions, inspiring others in the face of adversity.
