During his appearance at the recent SBC Summit Barcelona in September 2023, iGaming Daily’s James Ross, Multimedia Editor at SBC, filmed a special interview with Portugal legend, and former Balon d’Or, La Liga, Serie A and UEFA Champions League winner Luis Figo.
In attendance at the show, due to his brand ambassadorial position with sportsbook and igaming platform provider Digitain, Ross recorded a special video episode of the iGaming Daily podcast, and quizzed the former Barcelona star about his time with the Blaugrana. Ross asked Figo to look back on his time living in the city, and playing for the club, to which the 127-cap former Portugal international remarked “I had five amazing years in this city, I came here to win titles and can say I achieved all fantastic moments during these five years”.
Ross also asked Figo about his time at Real Madrid, and remarked that the Almada, Portugal native had won trophies at every club he’s been to, before going on to ask Figo what the highlight of his career was. Figo struggled to pick a single moment, telling Ross “in 20 years it’s always difficult to choose just one highlight, but for me it was always a dream to win the Champions League, as I think it’s the best club competition in the world”, before going on to say it was his dream to achieve that from when he was young.
Ross then asked Figo about the Portuguese national team with whom Figo went to the Euro Championships in 1996, 2000 and 2004, as well as the World Cup in Japan and South Korea in 2002, and in Germany in 2006. Figo told Ross that he thinks Portugal are one of the best national teams in the world, and that they were ‘looking forward to the next Euros’ and hoping to do well.
Ross wrapped up the interview asking Figo about his position with Digitain, and combining the sports world with the sports betting world. “I think the betting industry and football industry are already connected”, Figo told Ross, “I think it’s an opportunity to engage (many) more people, so I’m very pleased to work with Digitain for the last year and a half, I have a good relationship with the president and I think they show a lot of leadership in providing the technology for the customers”.
