Just four teams remain in the hunt to lift the Super Bowl trophy in New Orleans.
Following divisional round wins, the Washington Commanders, led by rookie sensation Jayden Daniels, take on the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship game before the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills face off for the AFC crown.
Ahead of the action, Jason Logan was joined by the Host of the Bet the Board podcast, Todd Fuhrman, on the latest episode of Covers’ Sharp 600 to break down all the best bets.
NFC Championship game
Kicking off the action on Sunday, for the third time this season, the Washington Commanders will take on the Philadelphia Eagles. Honours are even between the two sides as it stands, with the Commanders avenging an earlier 26-18 loss to the Eagles with a 36-33 week 16 victory.
The Eagles have emerged as six-point favourites for the game, however, the home side’s chances may pivot depending on the health of their quarterback Jalen Hurts, who is battling a knee injury.
On the matchup, Logan said: “For me, the edge is the defence. Washington have gone up against some pretty soft defences so far in the postseason. A real soft secondary from Tampa Bay [Bucaneers] and then that depleted Detroit Lions’ defence that kept losing bodies.
“But this is a different beast. [Nick] Fangio’s defence is very tricky. They don’t blitz much, which is something that they saw a lot from Tampa Bay and Detroit and they always look the same pre-snap. They’ve given Daniels trouble already this year so that’s why I like the Eagles in this one.”
The points spread for the game has been set at 47.5 and both Logan and Fuhrman were bullish on taking the under, predicting that both teams will be looking to play “keep ball” on offence. They also noted the Commanders’ success this year extending drives by converting third and fourth downs.
AFC Championship
Over in the AFC, the Kansas City Chiefs will be looking to make the Super Bowl for a third successive season but standing in their way are the Buffalo Bills – led by many people’s favourite for the NFL MVP award, Josh Allen.
The Bills are just one of two teams to beat the Chiefs this year, emerging victorious in their week 11 clash 30-21. However, they will have to break a streak extending all the way back to 1992 of playoff losses on the road if they are to make it to New Orleans.
Given his form this year, both Fuhrman and Logan are backing “the best player in this game” Josh Allen to beat the Chiefs and take Buffalo to a Super Bowl despite the Bills starting as plus two underdogs.
If they are to win, Fuhrman expects it to happen on the ground as he is taking Josh Allen to have under 31.5 pass attempts.
“Josh Allen is still being priced up like that elite quarterback but he’s doing it with his legs and his decision-making,” explained Fuhrman. “It [will be] all hands on deck. It’s Allen, it’s Cook, it’s Ty Johnson and it’s Ray Davis. This Chiefs run defence has been a lot leakier down the stretch than it has been all year.”
Anytime touchdown
Rounding out their predictions, the pair also picked out who they believe will make it to the endzone at the weekend.
Logan’s pick is the Eagles’ tight end, Dallas Goedert (+310), citing a Washington defence that gave up eight touchdowns to tight ends in the regular season and one last week to the Detroit Lions’ tight end, Sam LaPorta.
“He [Goedert] has been key to this Eagles passing attack,” echoed Fuhrman. “Eight receptions, 102 yards and a touchdown on his resume so far this postseason and five catches for 61 yards in one of the meetings against the Commanders [earlier this season].”
In the AFC Championship game, Fuhrman encourages punters to “take a flyer” on the Bills’ running back duo of Ty Johnson and Ray Davis, both at +750, given Kansas City’s aforementioned soft defence against the run.
