In light of the Cheltenham festival this week, Oddschecker has given race fans an inside look into the life of a horse trainer.
Neil Mulholland has been one of racings more established racehorse trainers since 2008. With over 100 horses in his stable according to britishorseracing.com, Mulholland’s horses has collected ovr £1.5 million in prize money over the years.
Mulholland let the people at Oddschecker into his Conkwell Lodge Stable to experience the day in a life of what it means to be a well-renowned horse trainer.
“I went to school and did what I had to do, but my mind would have always been with the horses,” said Mulholland.
“Having a raechorse and training is an expensive hobby. There’s a lot more to having a horse in training than just going to the races. We’re very lucky to train in such a beautiful place. The horses enjoy it and there’s no reason why the owners shouldn’t enjoy it.”
But as instrumental as Mulholland is in the development of the horses in his stable, a great team goes a long way in making a successful stable.
“We’re quite lucky to have a few members of staff that have been here nearly 10 years,” he continued Mulholland.
“Its great to have the continuity of good people. No matter how good you are, you’re as only as good as your team.”
Ashleigh Wicheard is one of the horse riders highlighted in the video, and aims to improve the barriers for more diversity within horse riding.
Wicheard said: “One of the things I noticed was that there wasn’t a lot of diversity and I didn’t feel like I would be able to make an impact if I wasn’t in racing which is one of the main reasons I came back to work full-time.
“I’ve been a guest speaker at the racing industry conference, so I’m just doing what I can really to make a positive impact.”
Mulholland showcases his breathtaking stable in Limpley Stoke and goes into detail how he got into horse racing, with the highs and lows outlined by himself.
