In the Hipher Agency’s recent webinar, the European Gaming Mini Meetup, a panel of guest speakers discussed the stricter regulations coming into effect in certain countries in continental Europe.

What is it?

A panel of professionals with extensive experience of gambling legislation discuss the political dynamics of betting oversight in three Nordic countries and in Romania, with a specific focus  on the stricter regulations coming into force.

Who is it?

Host:

Morten Ronde, CEO of the Danish Online Gambling Association and Managing Partner at Nordic Gambling.

Speakers:

Minna Ripatti, Founding Partner and Legal Advisor at Legal Gaming in Finland

Ludovico Calvi, President at Global Lottery Monitoring System (GLMS), Sport Betting Consultant at Oregon State Lottery

Odette Nestor, Former Romanian Regulator, President at Asociatia Organizatorilor de Jocuri de Noroc la Distanta (AOJND)

Gustaf Hoffstedt, Secretary-General at the Swedish Trade Association for Online Gambling

Jari Vahanen, Partner at The Finnish Gambling Consultants Oy

What is being said?

Commenting on the situation in Romania, Nestor said: “What is new in Romania is that, yesterday I was in Parliament because we had this parliamentary draft of legislation, which is talking about land-based more, and they want to put limits and square metres between the church and school, and also between the land-based locations.

“Also in this draft of legislation, there is one article talking about the advertising, which nobody considered from the beginning to be so important or so dangerous for our market. But now everybody is screaming and they don’t know what to do.

“What this article is saying is that we are not allowed to have advertising on ‘big dimension banners’, Nobody knows what it means by ‘big’, and what it means by ‘banners’ –  it is very unclear and can be used by some authorities to stop advertising.”

Why should I watch it?

To hear insights into potentially stricter regulations which could be introduced across continental European gambling markets, particularly in Finland, Denmark, Sweden and Romania.
