Conservative shadow home secretary Chris Philp blasted the government after an investigation revealed migrants have been gambling their living payments.

Following the news that asylum seekers across the UK have been using taxpayer-funded payment cards for gambling, an investigation has been launched by the home office.

A Freedom of Information request made by PoliticsHome revealed there were up to 6,500 payments in gambling environments which has only antagonised the public further during the current migrant crisis.

Conservative shadow home secretary Chris Philp said: “This Labour government is allowing illegal migrants to gamble using taxpayers’ hard-earned cash. This madness has to end.”

TalkTV’s host Mike Graham relayed the thoughts of some by claiming that “People are going, what am I even bothering working for? Why am I paying tax the way that I do to be utterly frustrated that people are getting everything for nothing?”

In terms of the context of the spending, migrants are given an ‘ASPEN’ card by the Home Office to pay for essential living expenses.

The highest recorded period was during a week in November as 227 attempted to use or successfully used the cards to gamble – whereas the lowest incidence was during July, with just 40 across that seven-day spell.

Given that online gambling is prohibited with this cards, the results show that the majority of the individuals had been operating in land-based locations.

“It’s a really bad story; you’ve got Labour who are really struggling to find a long-term solution.” Said political commentator James Price on TalkTV
