Every four years, the FIFA World Cup brings people from all over the world together for just over a month of footballing magic. But while most of the attention remains on what happens on the pitch, it’s often what happens off the field that really sticks out.

English and Scottish fans in particular descended on American cities like Boston and introduced their Atlantic cousins to one of the more unique aspects of the beautiful game: chants.

In this latest advert by Paddy Power, the gambling giant pokes fun at the cultural differences in UK and US footballing chants and attempts to educate the host nation on what it really means to create an iconic football chant.

The ad opens by establishing the premise.

An English football fan has landed in America for the World Cup. He sets out to teach American fans how to do proper football chants, after saying, “Americans are known for having terrible football chants”.

The England fans’ assertion is confirmed when he asks “Danny Zuko” (not that one) to give him an example of an American chant. The result is a bucket filled with vomit.

This is where the real education begins.

The England fan reveals that chants aren’t about encouraging your team, “the point is to insult and threaten the opposition”, he finished.

After a few more exercises designed to “toughen up the American fans”, including a crash course on booing during other nations national anthems, the correct way to abuse a player taking a corner and what you should do if you see a baby crying, the American fans appear ready to go.

But old habits die hard and the advert closes with the American fans defaulting back to an old reliable chant, “DEFENCE. DEFENCE. DEFENCE”. With America set to face a formidable Belgium side in the round of 16, we hopefully won’t have to listen to those chants for much longer.
