The latest episode of Betfred’s ‘The Last Tackle’ was a special one, as the studio welcomed RFL CEO Ralph Rimmer, who reflected on a period filled with obstacles within the sport. 

In what was arguably the most significant setback, the world cup suffered a delay, with it being something that delivers not only back page news, but also front page news according Rimmer.

“It was a big blow, a huge disappointment, the ball had been rolling for six years and we still had very high hopes it was going to be delivered at the end of 2021. The World Cup delivers things that the rest of our sport can’t – it delivers a colour, vibrancy and a clash of cultures in a good way that nothing else does.”

He went on to state that the sport will pick itself up from the floor and dust itself off, preparing for a big World Cup when it does arrive. Adding that they didn’t drift apart from their counterparts down under and they remain massively confident about the tournament in 2022. 

Significantly, support remains from the BBC, which is something that was lauded by Rimmer as he also heaped praise on Betfred and the wider RFL family with the sport continuing to grow and navigate through a tricky period. 

Another figure that Rimmer was keen to praise after a year filled with challenges was England coach, Shaun Wane, who has remained dedicated and continued to do everything he can in his pursuit of success.
