Betfair has bolstered its Euro 2024 coverage with the addition of the former Newcastle United and England striker Alan Shearer.

The record Premier League goalscorer will be offering his insight throughout the tournament on Betfair’s channels and will also be appearing on Betfair’s Football…Only Bettor show alongside ex-Scotland international Alan McInally.

In the first episode of the podcast, released ahead of the first round of matches, the pair preview England and Scotland’s opening fixtures against Serbia and Germany and their respective chances in the tournament.

Shearer says that “England have as good a chance as we’ve ever had” at winning the tournament, saying that England “could and probably should have the best front six” at Euro 2024.

His only concern is England’s defence given the absence of Harry Maguire, who has been an ever-present at the back during Gareth Southgate’s previous major tournament campaigns.

Given he is a Scot, McInally is less inclined to throw his weight behind England as favourites and instead talks up the chances of France and Portugal as potential winners.

McInally is also confident in Scotland’s chances of making it to the knockout stages of the tournament and he predicts they will begin with a 1-1 draw against the hosts Germany.

Shearer won the Golden Boot award during England’s run to the semi-finals at Euro 1996 and during the episode, he describes his experience playing under Terry Venables at the tournament and how his man-management skills allowed Shearer to be so successful.

The former Premier League winner was recently voted as England’s greatest striker of the last 30 years according to a YouGov survey, beating out the likes of Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane and his Euro 1996 strike partner Teddy Sheringham.
