The Florida state legislature passed a bill legalising sports betting this week, and although this has come as welcome news to many gambling incumbents, Dustin Gouker argues there are still ‘speed bumps’ to overcome.

What is being said?

Identifying Florida as the ‘big fish,’ Candee quizzed Gouker for an update on the situation regarding legal sports betting in the Sunshine State.

Gouker remarked: “This is, depending on who you talk to, good news or bad news. Florida sports betting passed the legislature this week in a special session convened just to deal with a game compact related to the Seminole Tribe and other matters related to gambling in the state.

“As far as we are concerned, this legalises betting and sports betting in the state, which sounds like cause to celebrate and normally we would be but there are still more issues when it comes to betting in Florida.

“There are speed bumps or major things could derail sports betting in Florida, so first up is it deals with the federal compact with the Tribe in the state, this has to go for federal approval, and a lot of people think this will get struck down, that sports betting will not be allowed to stand as part of this compact, which would put us back to square one.”
