Racing Post: Assessing England’s World Cup chances

On the eve of the 2022 FIFA World Cup which kicks off this Sunday with hosts Qatar against Ecuador, the Racing Post gave viewers a lengthy preview.

Host Bruce Millington, alongside Racing Post’s Mark Langdon and James Milton, took a look at every group from A to H breaking down their favourites to advance to the knockout stages and what teams may throw a surprise in the works.

The panel focused on England’s chances of a first trophy since 1966 following a semi-finals appearance in the previous World Cup in 2018, going one step further as runners-up in the EURO 2020 final last summer.

Both Langdon and Milton agreed Gareth Southgate picked the right squad to travel to Qatar, but did raise concerns regarding England’s backline and the England manager’s cautious approach.

Overall, all panel members agreed England should win Group B ahead of Iran, Wales and the USA, expecting the team to reach at least the Quarter-Finals.
