The NFL action continues as the league’s regular season reaches its halfway point.
Week nine kicks off on Halloween night as the Aaron Rodgers-led New York Jets take on the Houston Texans. A full slate of fixtures on Sunday is then rounded off on Monday night when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers travel to face the unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs.
Ahead of the action, Jason Logan was joined by the host of the Bet the Board podcast, Todd Fuhrman, on the latest episode of Covers’ Sharp 600 to break down all the best bets for the weekend.
Thursday Night Football
Despite coming off a loss to the New England Patriots, the New York Jets are two-point favourites to take home the win against the Houston Texans, and Fuhrman said that he will be betting the Jets money line, which currently sits at -125.
The Houston Texans are without star wide receivers Stefon Diggs and Nico Collins, limiting the attacking options of quarterback CJ Stroud. Therefore, Fuhrman believes, the Jets will pick up a “much-needed win”.
Given the lack of options for Stroud, Logan’s best bet for the game is for the Texans’ tight end Dalton Schultz to have his longest reception be over 17.5 yards.
Logan explained: “Schultz was already a pretty big part of [the Houston] passing game and then we look at the Jets, they could be missing their top coverage linebacker and potentially two starting safeties.
“That sets up really well for Schultz, who’s among the top tight ends in routes run and snaps taken.”
Anytime Touchdown
Next up were anytime touchdown bets, and the duo’s picks were the Indianapolis Colts’ Josh Downs and Chris Olave, wide receiver for the New Orleans Saints.
Downs is a “steal” at +300 according to Fuhrman, who will be serviced in the game against the Minnesota Vikings by the veteran quarterback Joe Flacco – who is preferred under centre to Anthony Richardson.
“An upgraded quarterback means Downs becomes the elite route runner and arguably Joe Flacco’s number one weapon, especially in the red zone,” said Fuhrman.
Meanwhile, Olave and the Saints take on the struggling Carolina Panthers who sit on a 1-7 record. Carolina have given up the most passing touchdowns in the NFC and have the second-worst red zone defence in the league.
Back the Bears and the Colts
The injection of Joe Flacco into the Colts team has the duo believing that the side can hit the over, currently set at 20.5 points, against a Vikings defence that is “ripe for the picking” for the veteran quarterback.
At the other end of the experience scale, rookie quarterback Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears are Logan’s pick to get the job done over the Arizona Cardinals. Chicago will be looking to bounce back from last week’s last-gasp loss against the Washington Commanders – courtesy of a tipped Jayden Daniels hail mary.
“Chicago’s defence did what very few could do which is slow down Washington and Jayden Daniels and they’ve got a much easier foe in Arizona,” explained Logan.
