Reminiscing on his 2009 Cheltenham victory, Sir AP McCoy believed that his winning horse ‘never got enough credit’.
As part of William Hill’s build up to the event, which commences on 14 March, Host Leonna Mayor was joined by McCoy and Barry Geraghty as they reflected on the jockeys winning performance riding Witchita Lineman in the 2009 William Hill Trophy Handicap Chase.
On his horse, he stated: “I always felt guilty for the horse because he never got enough credit. He could be the best jockey in the world but you need a willing partner and he needs to want to do it and that’s the one thing I felt with that horse, he’s got an unbelievable will to win.”
Talking more about the runner, McCoy noted that, before the race, he did not have a lot of experience, being a novice, but stated that he was 4/1 favourite to win.
“He wasn’t a bad jumper, he just had his own way of doing it and he wasn’t a particularly quick horse. This was a very competitive handicap, he was a little out of his comfort zone pretty much from an early stage.
“But I knew that if I could keep him in contention and keep him jumping that he’d always have a chance.”
Within the video, McCoy also detailed his thought process for Witchita Lineman during the race itself and how he got him first over the finishing line.
