The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) has called for evidence from all parties with an interest in the way that gambling is regulated in Great Britain to have their say in the Gambling Review.
What is it?
As the government’s ongoing review of the 2005 Gambling Act, BGC wants the millions of people who enjoy betting to have their say.
The betting and gaming industry contributes £3.2 billion to the UK Treasury, supports 100,000 jobs and generates £350 million for racing – funding that the BGC highlights could be put at risk by the illegal unrelated market. The BGC states: “that’s why it’s vital the government gets this review right.”
The key areas needed for evidence are: Online protections – players and products, advertising, sponsorship and branding, The Gambling Commissions’ powers and resources, consumer redress, age limits and verification, land based gambling.

Whilst calling for people to get involved in the government’s call for evidence which runs for 16 weeks and will close on 31 March 2021.

What is being said?
“The Review could have unintended consequences that could lead people to look for unregulated, unsafe alternatives online.
“These black market sites exist online and don’t care who they target, how old customers are, how much they are spending, whether they have had gambling problems in the past or are trying hard to self-exclude.
“Getting future changes wrong may see people turning to unlicensed operators without all the safety elements the regulated industry has put in place. It risks turning the clock back to the bad old days.
“The UK’s licenced, regulated industry is one of the safest places to enjoy a flutter in the world. This is because, working closely with the police and the authorities, we keep gambling free from crime.
“The government says the rate of problem gambling is 0.5% and has been stable for the past twenty years. But we believe that one problem gambler is one too many which is why the regulated industry wants to see more changes in the future – and we need to get them right.
“We want people who enjoy a flutter to do so with the regulated industry. It’s a safer bet.
