Payment Expert’s Joe Streeter interviewed representatives of Tappit and The Jacksonville Jaguars, about how the firms are continuing to benefit from their recently formed partnership.

The collaboration, which saw the implementation of Tappit’s contactless mobile payment technology being integrated into Jaguars’ fan app and throughout the Jaguars’ TIAA Bank Field stadium for the 2020 football season.

The implementation of the cashless solution, which was accelerated by the pandemic, reduces the risk of fraud and theft, as all payment information is kept securely within the Jaguars’ app and fans do not have the added worry of carrying additional cards or cash which can be easily stolen.

The partnership allows the stadium to track anonymous customers’ purchasing behaviour such as a companion a ticket holder may bring along and can give understanding to their customers’ experience, so that whilst these customers are in the stadium, they can customise the experience for them in a way that is relevant to understanding what they purchase. It means that when they purchase and where they purchase creating a very unique experience for every single fan. The data also allows club sponsors monitise in a way they have never been able to do before.

The app hosting the tickets for the game allows customers to order food and beverage, their payments are there, all available all in one place on the customers mobile phone. The discussion of the future adoption of sports betting, once state regulations are passed, was expanded upon as an idea, with hints that it could be coming in the near future.

What is being said?

Chad Johnson: “We are a very heavy data driven company, I once heard somebody say that ‘we are drowning in data but starving for insight.’ That is something I believe Tapit also helps us with.”

Jason Thompson: “You can’t rebrand yourself with sports fans it has to work quickly and the benefits have to be communicated in a very clear way”

What are the conclusions?

  • The use of cashless payments have been accelerated by the pandemic.
  • The data collected from customer behaviour can be used to create more unique customer experiences.
  • In the past four to five months there has been a significant change in major organisations attitudes towards cashless environments.
  • With many teams in the US transferring to mobile tickets, forcing fan behaviour to adopt the technology, making the fans less resistant to adopting a mobile payment solution because they have been forced to adopt other technologies in the face of the pandemic.
  • The mobile contactless payment option is a platform that could easily adopt sports betting payments in-stadium.

Why should I watch it?

To understand how cashless environments have evolved within a sporting setting, how the data collected can be used to create better customer experiences and how this technology can be adopted for a future of in-stadium sports betting.
