Goodwood Racecourse saw British horse racing history made on 8 September, 2026, as Najidi Storm, sent off at odds of 1-33, lost to 10-1 shot Wreck It Ronnie in the Cleansing Service Group Novice Stakes.
The defeat has earned Najidi Storm the title of shortest-priced loser in British racing history, surpassing the previous record of 1-25, jointly held by Doom (2023) and Royal Forest (1948).
Trained by Harry Charlton and ridden by Lewis Edmunds, Najidi Storm was beaten in a field of just three by Wreck It Ronnie, trained by Charlie Pike and ridden by Kieren Fox. Wreck It Ronnie is part-owned by Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden, and takes the second half of its name from Foden’s son, Ronnie.
The result has sent shockwaves across the racing industry, with few having expected Najidi Storm to lose. The horse carries an elite pedigree, sired by Frankel, described by the Guardian as “the greatest horse that looked through a bridle”, and out of Scuffle, making him a brother to 2019 St Leger winner Logician.
Bookmakers BoyleSports and Paddy Power both confirmed they were left out of pocket by the result.
BoyleSports’ Brian O’Keeffe said: “We’ve witnessed the shortest-priced loser in British racing history”.
Paddy Power’s Paul Binfield said: “Wreck It Ronnie sure lived up to his name with favourite-backers and the winner was actually a loser in the book with punters taking a chance against the very short-priced ‘jolly’.”
